An Instagram post shared on Boseman’s account on August 29, 2020, revealed that the “Black Panther” star passed away at 43 due to stage 4 colon cancer. The statement detailed that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2016 and had undergone treatment for it without taking an extended break from his acting career. While Boseman underwent chemotherapy and numerous other surgeries, he still showed up to film movies like “Marshall” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

David Bowie didn’t want much ado about his cancer diagnosis
A statement shared on Facebook on January 10, 2016, revealed that David Bowie had passed away at the age of 69 after being diagnosed with cancer a year and a half prior. The statement served as an unfortunate confirmation of one of the biggest celebrity health rumors that turned out to be true, since fans suspected that the music icon was sick prior to his death. Shortly after Bowie’s passing, Ivo van Hove, who collaborated with Bowie on the musical production of “Lazarus,” told the Dutch news website NOS that the icon informed him that he had liver cancer.
The 2017 BBC Two documentary “David Bowie: The Last Five Years” revealed that Bowie had only learned that his cancer had become untreatable around three months before his passing. The rock icon was apparently adamant about keeping his diagnosis under wraps even after learning the news. During a January 2016 chat with The Telegraph, theatrical producer Robert Fox, who had been friends with Bowie for over four decades, said that most people only found out about his ill health through the media.
Fox also offered insight into why Bowie kept his diagnosis a secret from his inner circle and the general public, revealing, “He wanted the minimum of fuss. He was just a private man. And I think he wanted to protect his family from the insanity there would have been. It would have impinged on [his work], his family – everyone would have been inundated at a time when he didn’t need that or want that.”
Jackie Collins only told her children about her breast cancer diagnosis
On September 20, 2015, Jackie Collins’ family released a statement confirming that she had died at the age of 77. Only six days prior to the iconic author’s passing, she revealed to People that she had been privately receiving treatment for breast cancer for over six years. Jackie hadn’t just kept her diagnosis a secret from the general public but also from most of her loved ones, save for her three daughters. The best-selling author explained why she had been adamant about keeping her health issues private, saying, “I didn’t want to make it public and I didn’t want people’s sympathy. I don’t live my life that way. I like to be in control and so I took control of the situation.” The thought of her health woes being splashed across tabloid covers with sensationalized headlines had also notably influenced her decision.
On a more personal note, Jackie hadn’t informed her sister, Joan Collins, of her diagnosis because she was unsure of how she would react to the news. In a post shared on her website (via The Guardian), Joan wrote that her younger sister also didn’t want to add to her existing problems with her own. The “Dynasty” star felt that that instinct was on-brand for someone like Jackie, who “always put other people, particularly family, ahead of herself.”
Ultimately, the celebrated author told People that she had only publicly shared her diagnosis to encourage other women to inform their doctors about any lump in their bodies. Jackie notably admitted that she hadn’t gotten the lump in her breast checked for two years.
Nora Ephron felt that sharing her diagnosis would affect her professional and personal life
Nora Ephron passed away at the age of 71 on June 26, 2012. The New York Times reported that the Oscar-winning screenwriter’s son Jacob Bernstein said that she had died of pneumonia caused by myeloid leukemia. In a March 2013 The New York Times Magazine article, Bernstein wrote that, in late 2005, his mother visited a doctor after dealing with frequent bouts of fever, infections, and fatigue. Soon enough, Nora was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a group of blood cancers that can sometimes progress to acute myeloid leukemia.
As the “When Harry Met Sally” screenwriter underwent treatment over the years, she considered telling her friends about her diagnosis. However, she ultimately decided against it because she knew it would affect both her personal and professional life. On a personal level, Nora didn’t wish for every chat she had to become about her health. On a professional level, she knew insurance companies wouldn’t give her movies the green light due to the uncertain nature of her illness.
Meanwhile, Delia Ephron told NPR in December 2013 that her sister’s decision to keep her diagnosis private was an extension of who she was. According to Delia, if Nora had opened up about having MDS, the world would deem her a “famous sick person,” and people would bombard her with their comfort. Delia also imagined that her sister, who was a private person, would also be constantly approached by people who had loved ones dealing with illnesses similar to hers. While she understood Nora’s motivations, Delia couldn’t deny that her desire for privacy prevented her from sharing her own feelings about the diagnosis with her loved ones.
